Week 4 - Same Subject different Light project

The first candle only has light from candle light. The light travels from the the top of the candle, however not showing the sides of the candle, the plate or the table it is upon. The focal point becomes the light source itself. On the second picture, the source of light is the candle light and a flash only. The top of the candle is accentuated even more so with the a direct flash, however it does not give much depth to the image although it shows what is in the background and color appears washed out. The third picture has candle light and energy efficient light source being bounced off of the ceiling. This gave a deeper yellow hue to the candle, which in fact the candle is yellow and the picture is pretty close to the actual color of it, the plate is much more pronounced and lighting helped to create depth, the candle looks like as if it has 'height' now.

Above is an example of natural light and below is an example of when a flash is used how the lighting affects the picture (the same time of day). The nuances created by natural lighting I think makes the subject more interesting and creates more of a focal point where the flash gives credence to everything in the picture, the entire picture is the focal point.

So far these are some of the favorite pics out of the many that I have taken the past couple of days. I prefer working with natural lighting and found that the time of day can either give a cool cast or a warm cast and depending on the tone and effect that I wanted would depend on the time of day that I would take the picture. I found that objects that were in the same color category had to have some kind of texture to it to make it interesting to me. I tried to touch on the different types of color categories that there are. There were shots where I found that I had to manually set my camera to as opposed to the auto due to focus and lighting effects that I was trying to get that I was not able to with the auto set. I was very excited over the dragonflies. There are three different types and these were taken over two days, amazingly they did not fly off and I was so close I could see them 'blinking' and moving their eyes!

Week 3 Macro - Foot / Toes

The above pic was one of my favorites out of all of the pics taken. I decided to use my daughter's foot as the subject matter. Of course this has a special interest to me! :) I wanted something that would be representative of her growth so far in life and a comparison from now to the beginning when her foot was inked and printed when she was first born, so small! Her foot now the size of mine in such a short time. In addition, I like the fact that her toe nail polish is chipped off and dotted, not 'perfect', that it is more important to travel the road rather than being held hostage by the 'fashion avenue'. In taking the picture, I had to lay down on the floor to get the view from floor level. I used my macro setting with flash. I also chose black and white giving the importance to the shape of the object rather than the tones of two subjects (the foot & carpet) and competing against each other. I did not take the underside of her foot since I wanted to keep the carpet as the background, but I just realized that I could have just had her rollover and taken close-ups of the underside. As my husband would say, Monday morning quarter backing. :)

Week 2 object various angles - Table

I chose a table at the local pool place to be the object of the assignment for this week. For the image below, the shot was taken from above at an angle looking down. By doing this, the focus became the table top, which shows the ornate metal work, however the focus of the legs is muted. In addition, the angle created the illusion that the legs are shorter than they actually are.

The image above was taken at an askewed side angle. This gave the focus on the legs instead of the table top. It also created an illusion of length in regard to the appearance of the legs which is longer than they really are and an almost 3d effect with one of them appearing as if it is 'coming out' of the picture.

Although the same object, the angles made it appear to be two different tables, one short, the other taller and the focal point not the same in either picture. (I did add a picture that I took during this project that I really liked of the table foot with the contrast also).

I converted this from a color pic to black and white, then colored in the pupil/iris and added a heart shape to the pupil, along with enhancing the contrast/brightness to give the highlighting/flame effect.

Perch

Our cat, Socks, was 'perched' on top of a dresser that is painted with fish, which also has a wooden fish on top of it. I thought it was a rather funny take on the 'cat staring at the fish bowl' concept, the best part is that it was not a set up, the timing was just right and I had my camera. The other part that I like, is the fact that 'Socks' is black and white and the backdrop has vibrant colors, so that also created a great contrast. I thought it only appropiate to call it 'Perch' since it is also a name of one of the fish in Lake Champlain.
